Fortified Wine

Fortified wine is a wine with a twist: technically it’s a still wine to which a neutral grape spirit (brandy), has been added during fermentation. In practice it gives us some huge and exciting flavours; some of the driest and sweetest, most and least acidic, (and strongest) wines can be sampled in this category…

There are many fortified examples of wine from around the world but three are most prominent by far: Port wine, produced in Portugal’s Douro Valley, is a classic fortified wine. Madeira, from the island of Madeira in the Atlantic, and Sherry, from Jerez in southern Spain, are two other famous fortified wines, both of which are produced from white grapes.

At our Drinks Club on Thursday 10th May, we will explore key styles of each of these, starting with the very dry and moving onto some of the biggest, richest and sweetest things to drink…
