EVENT INFORMATION

Debating Society: ‘The Politics of Fear’

Society is continually bombarded with the message that the threats it faces are incalculable and cannot be managed or contained. The ascendancy of this outlook has been paralleled by the cultivation of helplessness and passivity. We are delighted to welcome Professor Frank Furedi who will seeks to explain why fear acquired such a morally commanding status in society today.

About the speaker: Frank Furedi is a social commentator and emeritus professor of sociology at University of Kent. Author of many books including “Culture of Fear’, which was widely acclaimed as perceptive and prophetic, he regularly appears on Newsnight, Sky News, BBC News and writes for The Guardian, Spiked Online and The Telegraph. Frank is committed to promoting the ideals of a humanist education and his writings on higher education are devoted to affirming the value of the liberal arts.

About the Persuaders’: Founded by Alban James and Radiah Ford (née Binns), ‘The Persuaders’ is the Home House Debating Salon.  Swanky and politically incorrect, it offers members and their guests the opportunity to directly engage with thought leaders from politics, the media or the arts, in heated and purposely-chaotic discussions. The Chatham House Rule applies.

Cost: £5 member, £10 guest (all monies to our charity, The Marylebone Project)

Time/Location: 7.30pm, Etruscan Room
