ISOLATION by Suzanna Nour

The creature crawled lazily along the glistening leaf which formed part of its home …A shaft of sunlight pierced the jungle tree roof pouring it’s golden warmth onto the creature’s long back ..

“How wonderful life is..” it mused as it quietly grazed on the very leaf that supported it  ..Warmth , sustenance … Comfort , security …What more could one want  ..? Other than companionship of course ..That too was precious…

“Even if, sometimes, one chose to only half listen to the idle chattering of one’s siblings.. So much nonsense they talked really ..but, one loved them nonetheless ..That incessant chatter meant Home, comfort, certainty  ..

Home was never silent. The concert was varied and endless…”

The low rumblings of siblings, as they munched on their feed, the high pitched chirping of the cicadas ; Shrill calls of Birds and low ominous rumblings of fiercer animals from below… The babbling of the monkeys as they swung past.

Such vain creatures those monkeys were  ..thinking themselves  superior just because they could swing about  causing trouble ..Shaking  trees ..Flicking a brother off his branch just for the hell of it ..Disgraceful !

Yet, they too, meant home ..The creature loved them for their boisterous capacity for joy. One in particular ; A  young  chap  ….Always , being scolded by his Mum for taking off …

He would perch himself next to the creature and scrutinise intensely …

The creature felt flattered and they soon became friends. The monkey would talk of his  daily adventures; Describing colours and sights that offered images to match to the  cacophony of sounds ..

The creature would listen, sighing in wonder (and a little envy too ) ..

“Come see for yourself.” cried the monkey one day. ”I‘ll  show you  ..Crawl on my head and come explore  … You’re life is so dull.. you barely move ..In fact, I’ve noticed that you and your brothers have become very fat lately.

The creature was so offended, it decided to leave. Crawling away indignantly it hid itself in a crevice and refused to talk anymore. ”Suit yourself“ shrugged the monkey as he launched himself on to a dangling vine and swung through the air with a yelp of pure joy .

The creature’s siblings gathered round..” Good riddance“ they mumbled .. We told you not to mix with that vulgar lot. They’re not our sort !

“Forget about him ! We’ll soon cheer you up.“

But the creature didn’t feel like coming out. ”I’ll stay here for a bit longer if you don’t mind“.

Time passed and the creature thought hard about what the monkey had said; Was there a bigger world out there to be explored? And now, had that opportunity been lost? Through Pride? Or fear ?

Yes! Fear of leaving the known and stepping out into the unknown…

The creature lost it’s appetite and  all sense of time and place ..Trapped in its loneliness, it no longer cared for anything  ..The sounds of the jungle became fainter until even the calls of its brothers could no longer be heard.

And it wept and wept in a slow and steady  flow. Gradually, it’s silver tears congealed into a continuous glowing thread that coiled itself around and around .Try as it might, the creature could not stop the  tears and could only look on in horror  as the soft silken cord engulfed it. Hardening into a ruthless coffin.

Incarcerated alive, the creature endured an agony of torture.. Its very limbs were ripped apart.. And even greater than the physical pain, was the mental anguish it endured Memories of a paradise lost reeled around and around until the creature begged for death …. Was this then the price of fleeting happiness ?                                             Or was this part of a greater plan ?

The END…? Or
The BEGINNING   ?
